Automobile insurance, over and above the minimum required by law (SR-22, SR-26)*, covers not only the cost of repair of vehicles and injuries, but also helps protect your other assets in the event of lawsuits. It is important to evaluate your need for coverage and to choose the right options. Take the time to work with the Martin Insurance Agency to educate yourself about your options. While we hear a lot of advertising about how much you can save with cheap or inexpensive insurance, it isn’t a bargain unless there is value, in the form of real protection for you and your assets, behind it. Our agents will investigate the various policies available to come up with the right balance of cost, deductible and coverage that fits within your budget.
Both people and property can be involved in an accident. Coverage will be needed to protect your assets in either situation.
Auto Insurance (Injuries)
Bodily Injury Liability helps cover medical expenses, lost wages, and permanent injury incurred when someone is injured by your vehicle.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists covers you and your passengers for injuries caused by someone without adequate coverage.
Auto Insurance (Property)
Property Damage Liability covers the damage to someone else’s property by your vehicle.
Collision coverage provides for the repair of your vehicle if it is damaged in an accident.
Other Than Collision coverage helps with the repair of your vehicle should it hit an animal, be stolen, or suffer glass or weather related damage.
Decide whether it is necessary to cover transportation expenses, such as coverage of the cost of a rental vehicle, should you not be able to drive your vehicle after an accident.
Injured parties, particularly those permanently injured or disabled, may sue for well over your policy limits. A Personal Umbrella policy will give you coverage over and above your auto, home and recreational policies. It can help keep you from losing everything you own.
Auto Insurance (Other Considerations)
Pick deductible levels that are reasonable and affordable. Begin putting money away in a savings account so that you have the amount of the deductible in hand, should it be needed.
When purchasing a vehicle, consider its safety rating, safety features and insurance rates.
Recreational vehicles such as ATVs, boats, classic cars, motorhomes, motorcycles or snowmobiles are usually not covered under a traditional automotive policy. Specialty policies can give you unique coverage such as Passenger Liability insurance in the event that you or another motorist injures your passenger. Please ask our agents about the coverage available for recreational vehicles.
* A Financial Responsibility Certificate of Insurance (SR-22) informs the Secretary of State of the State of Illinois as to the insurance status of problem drivers (with serious driving violations, repetitive violations, or those caught driving without insurance) and authorizes said Secretary of State to suspend an individual’s license upon cancellation (SR-26) or expiration of that insurance. The goal of the S&FR law is to protect Illinois citizens from uninsured motorists. If the insurance is cancelled by either party, the insurance company is required by law to notify the Safety and Financial Responsibility Section of the cancellation through the use of a SR-26 Cancellation Certificate. Upon receipt, S&FR the driver’s license is suspended until a new SR-22 is filed for that driver.
Policy coverage is subject to the terms, provisions, exclusions, conditions and endorsements as stated in the policy.
